“I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.”

Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

To date, the best book I have and likely ever will read.

In her younger years, she loved films and filmstars, and so glued pictures of her favorites to the walls of her room within her family’s secret hiding place in Amsterdam during German occupation. A few years later, still in hiding, she decided she wanted to be a journalist, re-writing and editing versions of her diary in the hopes that one day she might become a published author. Instead, in 1944, she and her family were discovered, forced out from hiding and sentenced to hard labor in the prison camps. She died at fifteen years old, separated from her mother, father, sister, and first almost-boyfriend. Her father, Otto Frank, was the only member of the family to survive and, after the end of the war, was the one who pressed for the publication of her diary.

If you go to The Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, many of the newspaper and magazine cut-outs of her favorite actors and actresses can still be seen decorating the walls just as they did before the Frank family left the secret rooms forever in 1944.

Her words are still out there to be read and, if you haven’t yet had the chance, discover them now. Discover them now and be changed by it, perhaps not quite like I was when first reading them at twelve and thirteen, but try all the same. I promise that more than a few of them will speak to you in a way that you could never have expected.
